Best Time for Everest Base Camp Trek

Spring (March-May)

Spring is a peak season for the trek as it is the best time to visit Nepal. This season is favorable for treks to other destinations like ABC, Mardi Himal, etc. as well. Spring brings color in the region with a slope filled with Rhododendron flowers.

We recommend pursuing Everest base camp trek in the spring season as expeditions to Everest also begin in spring. However, be prepared for the extreme changes in temperature that can fall as low as -15 degrees in Mornings and Nights.

Autumn (Late September – December)

Another peak season for the trek is the autumn season. The weather is favorable and the skies are clear. These are the reasons for the high traffic this season. With the two main Nepalese festivals (Dashain and Tihar) taking place in this season, our recommendation is to wait until October or mid-December to plan the trek. The weather is neither warm nor too cold in autumn.

Winter (Late December – February)

The weather can get pretty cold and chilly, specifically -20 to -30 degrees Celsius at the Everest base camp. It is not that trekking is impossible but winter is not favorable for the ones who are uncomfortable traveling under such extreme cold conditions.

Now obviously, the less favorable season for trekking is the monsoon. The cloudy skies and slippery route don’t exactly approve your trekking plans during monsoon.

Accommodations & Meals on the Everest Base Camp Trek

The trail to the Everest Base Camp serves you well with several places to stay that mostly include teahouses. The facilities are good considering the climatic and geographic conditions. Basically, the higher you go on this trek, there’s a lesser chance of getting well-off facilities like a hot shower and western-style toilets. Although there are luxurious lodges at Lukla and Namche, the teahouses are recommended as you can get access to the basic facilities easily there.

With meals consisting of items like bread, pancakes, fries, soups, eggs, rice, lentils, porridge, etc. there are not many varieties to choose from. We will make sure you get your meals 3 times a day during the trek. Although bottled drinking water is not included in the package, they will be available at all times. You will be served with breakfast in Kathmandu before you leave for the trek. We will also arrange dinner for your welcome and farewell in Kathmandu.

You will be staying at a 3-star hotel at Kathmandu and we will arrange considerably good accommodation for you as we move ahead in our journey. We will make sure you of it throughout the Everest Base Camp Trek.

Flight Delay & Cancellation

Due to extreme weather conditions and geography, there’s no predicting what shape the wind could take within a few minutes. Delays and cancellation of flights to and from Lukla are not rare. The monsoon season (January to end of February) is not so favorable for domestic flights in Nepal. The heavy rainfall, foggy view, and strong wind are accountable for the most flight delays and cancellations.

We recommend the travelers to plan the trip schedule considering the unpredictable climatic conditions and isolate one to two days of the trip accounting for such delays and flight cancellations.

This issue is strictly for domestic flights, specifically Kathmandu-Lukla-Kathmandu flights. The package for the Everest Base Camp Trek is exclusive of the international flights.

Challenges of Everest Base Camp Trek Nepal

The trek itself is a moderate one but requires to be well prepared. The high altitude and unpredictable weather conditions are the major challenges of this trek. The trail is rocky and with lots of ups and downs. A 130km trek such as the EBC Trek can be difficult for some. So, the trek may require some level of fitness. Any past hiking or trekking experience, or even past involvement in any activities requiring physical activeness are plus points for the Everest Base Camp trek. However, it is recommended to be sure yourself if you have a history of medical conditions related to the heart, lungs, or blood diseases. Also, please make sure to inform Zambuling Expedition Pvt. Ltd. about it before booking the trip.
