LUMBINI.  The birthplace of the Lord Buddha

Lumbini is the birthplace of Lord Buddha. It lies in the Lumbini zone, the Rupandehi district of Nepal. To arrive there we have to drive 9 hours from Kathmandu. According to history, Siddhartha Gautama was born in 623 BC. Queen Maya Devi gave birth to him in that ancient period. At that time he called Siddhartha Gautama but after achieving enlightenment in Buddhism and became Gautam Buddha. Like Hindu, peoples worship different gods and goddess Buddhist people also worship Buddha-like them. Lumbini is one of many magnets of pilgrimage, where many people come to visit and worship. The World Heritage site that is home to thousands of Buddhist pilgrims visit each year.

Old Monuments in Lumbini

There are different monasteries and pagodas building in different countries. Each and every monasteries and pagoda has its own design, significance, and importance. The developing activities are going rapidly and museums are still under construction. Lumbini is a place for meditation and it is also a symbol of the aspirations for peace, harmony, and religion. In Lumbini, the most important site is the Maya Devi temple. It points out by scholars that the temple of Maya Devi was constructed over the foundations of more than one earlier stupa and temple. On the south of Maya Devi temple, there is a famous pool name as ‘Puskari’. There is a story that Maya Devi took a bath in the pool before the delivery of Siddhartha Gautama.  Most of the visitors and pilgrims first visit Maya Devi temple. By the side of this temple, there is the Ashoka pillar by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BC. This pillar makes Lumbini more cultural and puts that prominently on the map for millions of pilgrims from all over the world.

 

Recently, several beautiful monasteries and shrines have been building by devotees from neighbor and Buddhist countries. A visit to Lumbini, the place of Gautam Buddha is not only for spiritual enlightenment but also for the satisfaction that one gets in such a calm and peaceful place.
